About this plant

Hygrophila polysperma is one of the fastest and most adaptable aquarium stem plants. Native from South Asia into Southeast Asia, it tolerates low light, a broad range of water conditions and tanks without injected carbon dioxide. Individual shoots commonly reach 25 to 40 cm in height and about 4 to 8 cm in width, so regular pruning is needed in both midground and background groups. Cut the upper portion above a leaf node and replant it; the rooted lower stem usually produces multiple side shoots. Stronger light creates shorter internodes and denser growth, but CO2 is not required for basic cultivation. Its rapid nutrient uptake makes it useful during the establishment of a new aquarium, although the same vigour can overwhelm slower plants. Dispose of trimmings responsibly, because Hygrophila polysperma is invasive and legally restricted in some regions. Check local rules before buying, trading or growing it.
