Tank footprint and substrate slope

Unit system

Average depth is calculated from front and back depth, so sloped aquascapes are handled without extra inputs.

Bag size is substrate volume. Actual bag weight can vary by brand, grain size, and moisture.

Aquarium Soil Calculator FAQ

What does the Aquarium Soil Calculator estimate?

The calculator estimates how much aquarium soil or substrate you need from tank footprint and desired substrate depth. For sloped layouts, it uses the average of the front and back depths.

How deep should aquarium soil be?

For many planted aquariums, a practical starting point is around 4-6 cm in the front and 6-10 cm in the back. Root-heavy plants and strong background planting usually benefit from deeper rear sections.

Why does the calculator include a buffer?

A small buffer helps cover settling, hardscape adjustments, slope shaping, and planting corrections. It is usually safer to have a little substrate left over than to run short during setup.

Can I use this for sand or gravel?

Yes. The volume calculation works for any substrate type, but weight estimates vary because active soil, sand, gravel, and porous lava substrate have different densities.
