FAQ
What does the Aquarium Soil Calculator estimate?
The calculator estimates how much aquarium soil you need based on your tank footprint and desired substrate depth. If your layout uses a slope, it calculates the soil volume from the lower front height to the higher back height.
How deep should aquarium soil be?
For most planted aquariums, a practical soil depth is around 4–6 cm in the front and 6–10 cm in the back. Carpeting plants usually need enough depth for stable rooting, while strong background plants benefit from a deeper rear section.
Why does the calculator include a sloped substrate option?
A sloped substrate creates more depth and perspective in an aquascape. Many layouts use less soil in the front and more soil in the back to make the aquarium look deeper and to support larger background plants.
How many liters of soil do I need for my aquarium?
The required amount depends on the tank length, width, and substrate height. A shallow layout may only need a few liters, while a heavily planted aquascape with a strong back slope can require significantly more soil.
Should I buy exactly the calculated amount?
It is usually better to buy slightly more than the exact calculated amount. Soil can settle over time, hardscape can change the layout volume, and extra soil gives you more flexibility when shaping slopes or planting dense areas.
Can I use this calculator for sand or gravel too?
Yes, the volume calculation works for any substrate type. However, aquarium soil, sand, and gravel can differ in weight, grain size, and settling behavior, so the result should be treated as a practical estimate rather than an exact weight calculation.
