Aquarium Soil Calculator

Planning a planted aquarium with active aqua soil? Select Soil above to calculate a flat bed or sculpted slope, then compare eligible real package options without switching to a separate calculator.

How much substrate do I need?

Use inside tank dimensions. A flat bed uses one depth; a slope uses the average of the front and back depths. The planning buffer is applied openly after the geometric volume, before whole-package recommendations.

Soil vs sand vs gravel

All three use the same volume formula. Soil is commonly chosen for planted aquascapes, while sand and gravel are useful for inert layouts. Select the material you intend to buy so the catalog only considers relevant products.

Aquarium Substrate Calculator FAQ

How much substrate do I need for my aquarium?

Use the inside length and width, then choose a flat or sloped bed. The calculator uses the average depth across the footprint and shows the raw volume separately from the planning buffer.

How much aqua soil do I need?

Choose Soil for active aqua soil, enter the footprint and the depth you want at the front and back. The package planner then uses available whole soil packages from the catalog.

How do I calculate substrate for a slope?

For a slope, average depth equals front depth plus back depth divided by two. Length × width × that average depth gives the raw substrate volume.

How much extra substrate should I buy?

A planning buffer covers small measuring differences and shaping adjustments. It is shown separately, and package plans may add visible surplus because products are sold in whole bags.

Can I use this calculator for aquarium sand or gravel?

Yes. Sand and gravel use the same volume geometry as soil; the selected type changes the eligible catalog products and supporting advice.
