How Much Weight Can an Aquarium Stand Hold?

A listed capacity of 100 kg is not enough for a 100-liter aquarium. The water alone is already close to 100 kg before the aquarium, substrate, rocks and equipment are added.

MDF is not automatically unsafe, and plywood is not automatically strong enough. Construction and load rating matter more than the material name. Keep water away from cut edges, joints and fastener holes.

Can Your Floor Support the Aquarium?

The floor carries more than the filled aquarium. Add the stand, sump, stored water, equipment and everything kept inside the cabinet. A large setup can place several hundred kilograms in a small area.

There is no universal residential floor limit that applies safely to every building. Concrete slabs, wooden joists, beam direction, span, building age and the stand’s contact area all affect the result. A cabinet with a broad base spreads the load differently from a frame resting on a few narrow feet.

  • Use the supplied base or leveling feet as designed.
  • Do not add casters, narrow aftermarket legs or improvised feet.

Use regular furniture only when its construction, dimensions and published load rating suit the complete aquarium. Most household cabinets are designed for everyday storage, not a water-filled aquarium that remains in one position for years.

Do not rely on how solid a dresser feels. Check whether the top can sag, whether vertical panels carry the load directly to the floor, whether the back prevents sideways movement and whether the material can survive occasional spills. Flat-pack furniture without a suitable rating should be treated as an unknown rather than as an aquarium stand.
