Swimming zone and behavior

This fish uses the bottom area, so leave enough open substrate area for movement and feeding.

Feeding

As an omnivore, Bristlenose Plecostomus should receive a varied diet rather than one repeated food type.

Make sure food reaches the substrate before faster fish take it.

Provide algae wafers, spirulina foods, vegetables, sinking omnivore pellets and occasional protein-rich foods. Do not rely on algae alone.

Natural habitat and origin

Origin: Paraná and Paraguay river systems.

Natural habitat: Streams and river margins ranging from turbid slow water to clearer flowing sections with gravel, wood and submerged cover.

Breeding difficulty: Beginner - Intermediate.

Adult size is normally around 10–13 cm. Male territoriality is focused around caves, so bottom space and shelter distribution matter more than aquarium height.
