Swimming zone and behavior

This fish uses the lower to middle part of the aquarium, so leave enough open substrate area for movement and feeding.

Feeding

As an omnivore, Red Garra should receive a varied diet rather than one repeated food type.

Make sure food reaches the substrate before faster fish take it.

Provide natural aufwuchs and biofilm plus algae wafers, spirulina foods, vegetables, small frozen foods and quality sinking pellets.

Natural habitat and origin

Origin: Middle Eastern river basins.

Natural habitat: Clear rivers, streams, ponds and other waters in the Jordan, Orontes and Tigris–Euphrates systems. The species grazes aufwuchs on stones and benefits from strong oxygenation.

Breeding notes

Breeding difficulty: Advanced.

Garra rufa is not a substitute for medical treatment and should not be maintained in crowded spa conditions. It can climb wet glass and escape through very small gaps. Avoid slow, long-finned tankmates.
