About this plant
Hyptis lorentziana is a fast-growing South American stem plant with broad leaves that can develop deep red to purple colour under intensive aquarium conditions. It was previously circulated under incorrect Hemigraphis names, including the invented trade name 'Hemigraphis traian', but its flowers place it in the mint family and confirm the name Hyptis lorentziana. The species is native from Bolivia through Brazil to north-eastern Argentina, while the aquarium strain was introduced from the Manaus area. Strong light, reliable carbon dioxide and a complete macro- and micronutrient supply are needed to maintain compact growth and saturated colour. Trim stems above a leaf pair and replant the healthy tops; the lower section normally responds with several side shoots. Emersed culture is also possible in humid, nutrient-rich conditions. Because of its speed and large coloured leaves, this plant works best as a controlled midground or background accent rather than as a low-maintenance stem.
