Syngonanthus sp. 'Belém' is a demanding Brazilian blackwater stem plant historically sold as Tonina sp. 'Belém' and widely associated in the aquarium hobby with Syngonanthus macrocaulon. The cultivated clone is best retained under its familiar trade designation because its exact identity should not be overstated. Narrow bright-green leaves crowd around the stems and form distinctive star-shaped crowns, especially when side shoots develop. Success depends on intense light, stable carbon dioxide, an acidic substrate and very soft water; carbonate hardness should ideally remain between 0 and 2 °dKH. A complete nutrient supply, including adequate micronutrients and iron, helps maintain healthy green growth tips. Vertical growth is moderate because the plant branches readily. For propagation, remove short healthy shoot tips and replant them carefully. Its precise water requirements make it an advanced midground specimen rather than a forgiving general community-tank plant.
