Is low-iron aquarium glass easier to scratch?

No. The common claim that low-iron glass is softer than regular float glass is not supported by manufacturer technical data. Comparable low-iron and standard clear glass have the same surface hardness and resistance to abrasion when processed in the same way.

Both can be scratched by sand, gravel, metal blades or grit trapped in a magnetic cleaner. Low-iron glass deserves careful cleaning because it is expensive and chosen for its appearance, not because it requires a completely different cleaning method.
