About this plant
Microsorum pteropus 'Orange Narrow' is a rare Java fern cultivar distinguished by its warm-coloured new growth. Young leaves emerge brown-orange to reddish before maturing to fresh green, creating a changing accent on wood or rock. The plant remains moderate in size, with narrow leaves and an upright-angled rhizome that may need occasional pruning to maintain a dense form. Like other Java ferns, it should be attached to hardscape or placed with the rhizome exposed; burying the rhizome can cause rot. It tolerates low light and can grow without injected carbon dioxide, although moderate light, complete water-column fertilisation and CO2 improve growth and strengthen the orange colour of new leaves. Propagation is simple through rhizome division or by separating adventitious plantlets that develop on older leaves.
