About this plant

Cyperus helferi is a distinctive Thai sedge and one of the few Cyperus species that adapts well to permanent submerged aquarium culture. It forms a broad rosette of narrow light-green leaves that reach about 20 to 35 cm high and 15 to 25 cm wide. The leaves bend and sway in the current, giving the plant a softer appearance than most upright grass-like species. Medium to strong light and carbon dioxide around 6 to 14 mg/L support steady development, while good water circulation helps keep the long leaves clean and evenly supplied with nutrients. Plant the crown above the substrate and provide root nutrition, especially when using inert gravel or sand. Growth is slow, so Cyperus helferi should not be shaded by fast stem plants. Remove damaged or ageing leaves at the base rather than cutting them across the middle. Mature rosettes produce daughter plants near the base or on flowering structures; separate them only after roots have formed. Its size and movement make it a strong midground or background specimen for larger aquariums.
