Echinodorus cordifolius 'Harbich Red' is a compact sword plant cultivar valued for its sturdy rosette and changing leaf colour. Fresh submerged leaves emerge with a reddish tone before gradually maturing to green, creating a subtle colour transition rather than a permanently red plant. The narrower underwater leaves differ noticeably from the rounder emersed foliage. Growing to about 40 cm at most, it works well as a midground feature in medium and large aquariums. A nutrient-rich substrate is important because this Echinodorus feeds strongly through its roots. Medium to strong light and supplemental carbon dioxide support compact, healthy growth. Mature plants may produce flower stalks carrying adventitious plantlets, particularly when the aquarium is open above the waterline.
