About this plant
Eriocaulon sp. 'Japan Needle Leaf' is a grass-like aquarium plant with very narrow, flexible dark green leaves arranged along a branching rhizome. Despite its trade name, it is not known to originate from Japan. Its species identity and collection locality remain unresolved, although it resembles Eriocaulon plants from fast-flowing Indian rivers. Submerged leaves can reach around 30 to 40 cm, while a practical maintained height is approximately 15 to 40 cm. The plant does not spread through conventional runners; established rhizomes branch and can eventually be divided. It is unusual among Eriocaulon forms because its roots can grip stone, allowing experimental use as a hardscape plant as well as a rooted midground or background accent. Medium light and added carbon dioxide support healthy, compact growth, but exact universal water and CO2 concentrations are not assigned because the cultivated form has not been identified botanically.
