About this plant

South-Asian stem plant closely related to Hygrophila difformis and formerly introduced to the hobby as H. difformis Red. It occurs along watercourses in India, Bangladesh and Guam. Submerged leaves stay smaller and are less deeply divided than those of H. difformis, and strong light can turn the shoot tips distinctly brown-red to pink. Stems branch readily and may grow obliquely or partly horizontally, producing a spreading bush. Culture is easy and growth is fast, though generally a little slower than H. difformis. Stronger light helps retain lower leaves and intensifies colour. CO2 is not essential but improves compact growth. Propagate readily from cuttings; emersed growth is vigorous and can produce pale violet flowers.
