About this plant
Poaceae sp. 'Purple Bamboo' is an unidentified true grass cultivated as an aquarium plant for its upright, bamboo-like stems and unusual purple-silver colour. Its species and even its genus remain unresolved, so the trade name should not be treated as a formal botanical identification. Under strong light, stable carbon dioxide and complete fertilisation, the stems develop their best colour and a crisp vertical form. The plant can survive less intensive setups, but it is typically greener and less distinctive there. It produces few side shoots until trimmed, which makes it useful for structured groups in the midground or background. Cut tops can be replanted for propagation. Purple Bamboo also grows readily above the waterline and can exceed one metre emersed, so regular pruning is essential in open aquariums and paludariums.
