Bucephalandra sp. "Brownie Jade"

Bucephalandra sp. "Brownie Jade" is a compact and very slow-growing Bucephalandra trade form from the broader Brownie group. Its exact botanical species identity and precise wild collection locality have not been reliably established. Like other Bucephalandra, it originates from Borneo and belongs to a group of rheophytic aroids adapted to growing attached to rocks along fast-flowing forest streams. The plant develops relatively rounded to elliptic leaves with a clearly visible central vein. Mature leaves range from medium jade green to very dark green, while fresh submerged growth may develop blue-green tones under favorable conditions. Numerous small silvery or whitish dots may be visible across the leaf surface, giving the plant a distinctive metallic appearance. Brownie Jade grows from a creeping to slightly ascending rhizome and gradually forms compact groups through lateral shoots. It is particularly suitable as an epiphyte on rocks and driftwood in the foreground or midground and works very well in nano aquariums. The rhizome should never be completely buried in the substrate. Low light is sufficient for long-term cultivation. Supplemental CO2 is not strictly necessary, but together with stable macro- and micronutrient availability it improves growth, leaf quality and coloration. Around 20–30 mg/l CO2 is suitable for optimal growth. Like many Bucephalandra forms, Brownie Jade may react more strongly to sudden changes in water conditions than to consistently low light or nutrient levels. Newly introduced plants may therefore occasionally lose older leaves while a healthy rhizome subsequently produces fresh growth. Propagation is straightforward by dividing the rhizome or removing well-developed side shoots. The plant can be cultivated fully submerged or emersed under high humidity.
