About this plant

Bucephalandra sp. "Mini Red" is a compact Bucephalandra trade form with unusual submerged coloration and should not be confused with Bucephalandra sp. "Lamandau Mini Red". Aquasabi specifically distinguishes Mini Red by its rounder, more strongly undulating leaves and its more intense blue-grey metallic sheen. The sheen is associated with the particularly high density of stomata visible on the upper leaf surface. Its exact species identity and natural locality are unknown. The plant resembles some of the horticultural Brownie forms that may be related to Bucephalandra pygmaea, but a species assignment is not currently justified. Mini Red forms densely branched rhizomes and develops a compact bushy group reaching approximately 8 cm in height. Submerged leaves are dark with a pronounced blue-grey metallic effect, while petioles and growing tips may develop strong dark-red coloration. As with other Bucephalandra, it is primarily an epiphyte for stone and wood. Growth is very slow. Low light is sufficient, while medium light, stable CO2, full nutrient availability and good current improve coloration and density. Never bury the rhizome. Propagate by dividing the rhizome or separating lateral and terminal shoots.
